So I haven’t posted too much lately. I don’t have a good reason for not writing, I just haven’t. I have been playing some Rock Band, but I think I found my nemesis song and I haven’t been able to get past it yet. I’m really just into Rock Band for the guitar and the drums so that’s what I’ve been playing so far. For some reason though, I can’t get past Rockaway Beach by the Ramones. I’ve only tried it a couple of times with the guitar, but I can’t get much past 25 percent of the song and I’ve only done a little bit better on the drums with a lot more effort. It’s good to have a challenge though.
That, and the Olympics have been on. For some reason this year, I’m extremely interested in watching. I know that it isn’t so I can listen to the annoying announcers on NBC because I’m usually yelling at the TV to shut up, so it must be that I’m actually interested in seeing how Team USA is doing on the Olympic level.
I have to admit that I got swept up with the Phelps Phananatics. The guy is an amazing swimmer. I haven’t tried friending him on Facebook or anything, that would just be weird. I’ll watch him on TV like the rest of the world and I’ll cheer for him, but I’m not going to try to be friend with him. I’ve also enjoyed watching gymnastics some this year. I’m starting to get into some track and field too. Realizing that when I ran the 400 in track, my best time was 56 seconds and I saw them run the 400 HURDLES last night in 47 seconds. Absolutely amazing.
Sandy and I got to thinking and realized that we weren’t interested in the previous two Summer Olympics and finally figured out why. In 2000, she was working in Virginia and living with me in North Carolina on the weekends. We were trying to plan our wedding and I was probably in the field training with the 82nd at the time. Then in 2004, I had just taken command of my battery and I was working 12 to 14 hours a day getting ready for 30 days at the National Training Center and 12 months in Iraq. It’s hard to justify watching a few hours of sports that you wouldn’t normally watch just for the sake of national pride and something to talk about around the water cooler.
It just works out this year to watch and I’m glad. As long as we haul in more medals than China, everything in the world will be all right.
